The Nike Streak XC 2 was the first minimalist shoe that I fell in love with. The shoe fits all the key criteria, light, flat (relatively~ 4mm drop and that seems to compress flatter), and at least slightly wider than a typical racing flat.
I used these (or the XC 2) almost exclusively while training for and during my first 3 marathons. They're intended to be a shorter distance Cross-Country flat, but I've found they work great as an all around shoe especially if your foot isn't too wide.
I've taken them from asphalt to concrete to the mountains and even the Grand Canyon.
The soles do get beat up on the rough stuff, but when they're as cheap as $40-60 it's hard to complain.
I'm a runner from Chicago, but living in the Bay. Always looking for new roads, trails and adventures.

Solid minimalist road shoe, that is hard to beat for the price.
