new barefooter from boulder co

Hey everybody! I have been slowly getting into barefoot practices, its been an interesting transition telling my body to stride differently that's for sure. After years of hell er I mean heel striking w/o even realizing it, it still feels strange to forefoot run. But I don't have the agonizing pain in my knees anymore, so I am not going back. But I find that the longer the run, the harder it is to maintain form and stride, but that is just the simple fact of fatigue. I have run marathons before so I am not always running completely barefoot so that I can get longer runs in.

Just moved to Boulder, CO too and have had the pleasure of meeting the folks at Invisible Shoes and also Michael Sandler, who wrote the book Barefoot Running. A lot of good info in these parts, but I wanted to get to know MORE new people, so I joined the forum. Looking forward to reading lots of posts from you all!

Cheers, Gina

Heeeeeeerrrreee's Johnny!

Howdy all!

Almost 41, been running since freshman year of HS. Ran through college. Ran marathons, 1/2 marathons, etc. Ran many of those races with painful knees, back, ankles...I think short of breaking something, I've had the gamut of running injuries. Several years ago, I ran (er, surfed) across the Pose Tech website where I got my first taste of, "Less shoe is better". They recommended the Puma H Street as a good shoe, and I tried it...with no success.

Turns out that I forgot to turn the volume down on the "too much too soon" knob. My feet were understandably trying to tell me that I had been subjecting them to over 30 years of a removable cast (ever see an arm or leg fresh out of a cast? Same thing with your feet) so the inherent strength, flexibility, and range of motion (not to mention feel) were almost nil.

About this time I read a post from none other than Barefoot Ted McDonald and his eventual Boston Marathon in the Vibram Fivefingers Classic. Enthused and enlightened, I bought a pair...

...and again had problems. That darn elastic cord and the achilles tendons did not like it. Elastic cord, I'd like to introduce you to Mr. Exacto...RELIEF!!!

After bouncing around a bit between VFF and racing flats, I was watching some training footage of pro boxers and UFC fighters. I noticed that many of them liked to jump rope...drumroll...BAREFOOT! Cue lightbulb of enlightenment turning on in my bald head. Buy jump ropes. Jump rope in bare feet, in VFF's, in Zemgear lows. Get up to 6 minutes. Run 1/2 Marathon in VFF Flow. Finish. Next stop, MARATHON!

Still doff the VFF's, NB Minimus et al for a quick spin around the block barefoot.

Nothing feels as wonderful as a freshly fallen rain, nothing talks as much as a foot caressing the mud, sand, gravel, grass, asphalt, and concrete. Do you feel the rains' cooling power as the asphalt sighs, its breath a visible wisp of steam? Do you hear your feet laugh as passers-by unhinge their jaws, their thickly clad stumps clomping the ground in protest? Do your feet beg to answer their unasked question? "Does it hurt?"<br> "No. I do not hurt because I can feel."

Vivobarefoot Venus

I just got my first ever pair of barefoot shoes: Vivobarefoot Venus ( http://www.vivobarefoot.com/us/venus-3717.html/ ). They're not for running or anything, but everyday wear, and they're new for Vivobarefoot this year. I'm very excited.

I got them for free provided I review them on my blog, so here's the first review with first impressions, if anyone's interested:

http://simplesavvy.wordpress.com/2011/05/20/first-impressions-vivobarefoot-venus/

I haven't seen too much information about them out there -- has anyone else come across a pair of Venus before? What did you think?

Confessions of an Englishman

Hi Guys,

Thank you for accepting me into your forum.

You maybe thinking that the title of forum topic is a bit weird but it was borne from a recent event.

My son of 7 had is his first confession prior to communion and as we talked about it he had to think of things to confess about. The usual came out such as being mean to his older brother, not listening his teachers etc. and then he asked me if I had anything to confess. Took me a back a bit as I haven't been to confession for some years and overall I have been what I believe to be a good person. It took me a few days of thought and then I realized that the biggest, baddest confession I had to make was to admit that I had in my previous vocation damaged people's health. In my previous profession I used to issue rigid orthotics, in fact I was so good at it that I was paid my normal wage plus a bonus.

I now run barefoot, preach barefoot walking and running and now also work for a company that has the same ethics that I have about the whole principle of being barefoot when it is possible and when it isn't to find the next available solution.

I am so looking forward to being part of this forum. And I hope you accept my confession without judging me too much.

BTW I watched my boys tear up the field in their bi-annual cross country 5K today both fitted out in ZEM Gear shoes fitted with Barefoot Science insoles. What an awesome combination.

Snipe Moncada

Has anybody heard of, seen or tried Snipe shoes? Just saw them on planetshoes.com website:

"This Snipe mary jane also has you walking the natural way, almost like walking barefoot."

Made in Portugal.

trail glove too tight

Well folks what to do. These shoes are tight across my mid foot. I have let the laces out enough that so that to tie them I had to take them out of the top 2 holes. I may try getting them wet and wearing till dry.

Pant length

Hmmmm running into an interesting problem. Finding a lot of my pants are no longer the right length. With out that one or so inch of heel lift everything is draggin on the ground. This is getting darn right annoying. A closet full of "old style" shoes that won't fit. Drawer full of pants that need altering.

Coming from Thailand and Wondering what to do with Midwest Winters

Hey all. First I'll give a real quick background on my barefooting story but if you want to, you can skip straight down to my current predicament. I was one of those kids who had to be constantly forced to wear shoes growing up in California, but for the most part did not. Then when I started going to school around 7 years old and wearing tennis shoes all the time, I began having all foot pain and even problems with joints in my feet getting out of place or even totally dislocated at random. My parents and I thought for a long time that I would just be a person who had to wear orthotics for the rest of my life, and it was a constant pain.

Then when I was 14 we moved to tropical Thailand, where being barefoot and wearing minimalist footwear is deeply ingrained into the culture. I decided that enough was enough with my orthotics and that it was too inconvenient to be bound to them while having to take off my shoes and deal with flooded streets all the time. By degrees, my foot troubles went away, but amidst all the busyness of adjusting to a new way of life, I didn't even notice.

That is until I was in a serious car accident and returned six months later to the United States at 17.

When I got here, three things happened. Firstly it was still very "cold" for this un-acclimated Thai girl, so I bought my first pair of sneakers in 3 years. Secondly, I decided I was healed up enough to start getting back in shape, so I began running, but I discovered that I had pain I had never felt in Thailand. It wouldn't be so bad while I was actually running, but the moment I stopped to walk I felt pain in my heels going all the way up my shins. I took it slow with the running, but even normally I loathed being on my feet, because after 15 minutes in sneakers my ankles would begin to ache. The third thing that happened was the TOMS day with no shoes. I was actually not a fan of TOMS (and I'm still not) or their thinly veiled marketing campaign. But a bunch of my friends were doing it, and so I got online to find out if they would be breaking any laws by walking into restaurants and such. It was then I discovered "the barefooting alternative", and it made incredible sense in light of all my past experiences. Traveling down the same internet trail, I found VFFs, which seemed like a good compromise between all my "strange" new ideas on footwear and my dad's concern about pieces of broken glass. Straight away I tore out all the inserts from my tennis shoes until I could get my hands on a pair, and I felt a marked difference.

My first run with the VFFs left me pain free and reunited with my old friend from Thailand, the wonderful feeling of a good workout in my legs.

For the past year, I've worn only flip flops or my VFF Sprints, and thanks to Cody from the show "Dual Survival" (a survival expert who is %100 barefoot except for snow) have convinced my dad I won't slice open an artery if I transition to going completely barefoot, which doesn't give me any trouble at all in California. Even during my visits to Washington state, it took a wind chill of 11 degrees and four inches of snow to rend me only temporarily from my flip flops.

Which brings me to my present problem. I'm moving to the Midwest for school, and while I've never lived there, I know they get snow and can have harsh winters. I'm wondering what some of you have done both for daily life and for running in the snow. I'd like to find something that is inexpensive enough for a starving college student, or will last me a long time for the price, and that is at the very least mostly waterproof.

"National Barefoot Day" & Twitter

National Barefoot Day (presumably in USA but I'll be barefoot in UK on that day anyway) is June 1st.

The most respected article directory on the internet is EzineArticles, and Chris Knight is the public face of EzineArticles. Today he put out the following tweet, which I take issue with:

"Our team will be doing a local shoe drive to benefit @Soles4Souls + we'll be celebrating National Barefoot Day June 1st to bring awareness." https://twitter.com/#!/ChrisKnight/status/69049422570467329

Soles4Souls description is: "Changing the World One Pair at a TimeĀ® by partnering with Businesses, Orgs. & Individuals to collect & distribute 14 million pairs of shoes worldwide"

I responded:

"Chris, your National Barefoot tweet doesn't make sense. Feet, posture & balance are healthier unshod, so why distribute shoes??" https://twitter.com/#!/ishabluebell/status/69146486549647360

If you're on twitter and agree with me, you might like to join the fray!

Teen Son With Plantar Fasciitis...Help?

Hello, My son (13) has been running in Vibrams and Merrill Trail Gloves since January. His knees and hips have been great...but recently his heel has been bothering him. I'm pretty sure it is plantar fasciitis. I can't tell if he has been doing too much too fast, or if the problem is caused by his lacrosse cleats (he is in the most pain after lacrosse which is two hours twice a week + games). Does anyone know of any minimalist cleats? My son told me that was an 'oxymoron', but I thought I'd check anyway! From what I can tell...he has VERY flat feet and a pronounced turn out that starts at the hips. His feet also tend to roll in just a bit. I'm trying to get him an appointment with an orthopedist next week...but until then I'm looking online to try and help him in any way I can. Thank you so much for any suggestions!

Running shoes

I am looking for some suggestions for minimalist running shoes. I have been wearing the Vivobarefoot Candy and I also have the Compton Wellie. But I can't really use these for running. I thought I was going to buy the five fingers so I sold my running shoes (I don't recommend getting rid of your current footwear BEFORE you have something to replace it). Anyway, so now I am stuck with nothing to run in. I tried the five fingers but found them to be snug around my toes. This makes me nervous because I switched to minimalist footwear because of numb toes. So, those of you who have tried the five fingers....do they stretch out? Any circulation issues with them?

I have also tried on the Merrell Pace Glove. And...well...it fit like a glove which was a little too tight for me. It seemed much too narrow (which is funny because I have a very narrow foot). I like the look of the Altra Eve but those are on back order, and I would kind of like to have something sooner than they can provide. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Thanks so much, Charity

minimalist shoes for kids --winter

I know it's May, but it's still snowy around here. Does anyone know of any great winter shoes for kids? Warm, but still barefoot-y? We need more than just runners with warm socks, we need something for deep snow....

I have this image in my head of a mukluk-type boot. Something soft and warm without a hard sole....and of course, not too pricey since my kids grow out of shoes in minutes.

Ideas?

minimalist shoes for kids --summer

I'd love to compile a list of some of the companies who make minimalist shoes for kids. I know a few:

Soft Star Shoes (babies, toddlers, kids and adults) http://www.softstarshoes.com/ Vibram (sizes 29-34) http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/products/Five-Fingers-Boys-KSO.htm Vivo Barefoot (sizes EU 27-39) http://www.vivobarefoot.com/us/kids.html/ Certain water shoes

I've heard Merrell will have some, but haven't seen them, yet.

What else is out there?

Need to replace Vivobarefoot Kalis

Hi all,

I'm looking for recommendations for a replacement for my brown Kalis. I unfortunately lost one on my way to work the other day when it fell out of my poorly-secured bike bag somewhere enroute. :o(

I have been happy with the Kali style, but don't like the new light brown with white sole they are offering. I'm thinking of trying the new beige Venus or possibly the brown Amelia, but honestly, I'm not that impressed with the colours in the whole Viviobarefoot line right now. (I would like the Venus better without the yellow trim).

Any new suggestions for minimalist office-friendly shoes in brown or beige? (I don't like SoftStars).

Thanks!

pain in the top of my foot

I'm new to minimalist running but haven't had any major issues in the transition, probably because I already spend a great deal of time barefoot or in flip flops.

Running in my Neos Saturday morning, I felt a sudden sharp pain in the top of my right foot above my toes. Was ~1/2 a mile from my car so I walked a bit and then ran a bit. The rest of the day I walked another 2+ miles because of some obligations I had.

I can barely walk now and have point-specific pain when I touch the top of my foot. No swelling or bruising that is noticeable.

It hurts when the ball of my foot pushes off while walking. Does not hurt when I'm just sitting or standing. When walking though, the pain radiates to my first 3 toes and hurts quite a bit. It also hurts when I flex my foot upward, but not down or side to side.

I've RIE'd(no compression) it the last two days and no ibuprofen.

Never had anything like this so what else should I do?

Learning to walk in minimalist shoes

Well what a surprise. Here I was feeling like I was getting conditioned with walking barefoot and was all excited to try out the Vivo Dharmas when they came...... Let me back track a bit. The ground I have around here is a mix of packed sand and gravel for the roads. The gravel is not the round kind but rather it is crushed granite pieces. In the hard packed areas this is sort of like walking on nails....dull nails but you get the point. There is also nice grassy areas that pose no challenge and woodland type terrain also nice to walk on. One other issue is that the frost is not out of the ground everywhere. Once the feet get numb on the cold ground those bits of granite are even more of a challenge. So those Dharmas would make working much easier..... Here is the surprise, as soon as I tried walking in the shoes my feet go to ground much differently. Within no time my knees were hurting but why. Well it seems with any foot covering I tend to walk fast, like I always have, hence my heel strikes first. Without shoes I must place my feet so as not to step on something too "uncomfortable" and thus my stride is shorter and I am walking slower.... Did a bunch of reading and this seems to be the normal way of things which means I got some learning to do to walk in minimalist shoes.LOL Hopefully my feet will get tough enough to not need the shoes during the summer but I have to say that so far I find that it is one thing to just stroll around barefoot but quite another to hoist a wheel barrow with a hundred pounds of wet sand and gravel and move that any distance. I feel that the lane ways here do not represent what our feet would ever find in nature for frequent walking, perhaps the occasional patch. SO I'm wondering if anyone has much experience with this kind of service and the amount of time it takes to be able to walk it with discomfort so one can concentrate on the work at hand.
